Community Helpers Theme

This is an amazing preschool theme for a preschool classroom, homeschool or learning center to appreciate the people who help us in our community. From firefighters and doctors to garbage collectors and mail carriers, kids will learn about the amazing people who keep our neighborhoods running smoothly!

A good start when deciding how to introduce a new theme to kids is to do it slowly and through circle time discussions. Break up the information into centers and different activities. Encourage questions, repetition, and engagement.

Circle Time Introduction

First, introduce the preschool lessons on community helpers by asking what is a community helper. You can discuss one category at a time and explain the role of each helper. Show pictures or flashcards of each helper and let children guess what they do! You can also invite them to share personal experiences.

There are so many types of community helpers;

  • Community helpers who keep us and our pets healthy: dentists, veterinarians, nurse, doctors
  • Community helpers who keep us safe: lifeguard, firefighters, police officers, emergency worker
  • Community helpers who keep us fed: bakers, gardener, farmer, chef
