Get On the Water with Lake Geneva Cruise Line

One of the first things your family should do to familiarize yourself with the area is to take a boat tour of the lake.

The Lake Geneva US Mailboat Tour is the classic way to see the lake. A tradition for over 100 years, the Mailboat delivers mail to residents along the shores of Lake Geneva during the summer season.Instead of stopping at each dock, the boat continues moving. Mail jumpers leap from the boat onto the docks, deliver the mail, and then jump back onto the moving boat as the passengers applaud.

The tour typically lasts around 2.5 hours and covers 20 miles of shoreline. Along the way you will see dozens of impressive homes and mansions, and learn about the history of the region and the famous people who own these “summer cottages”.

There are snacks and drinks available for purchase on the boat, along with postcards that you can mail from right onboard! This boat departs daily from June 15 – September 15 at 10am.

The Lake Geneva Cruise Line offers a few other kid-friendly ways to explore, but their Ice Cream Social should be on the top of your list. Who can resist ice cream, after all?

While you are enjoying your ice cream sundae on this 85-minute tour, you can admire and learn about the beautiful estates that line the lakeshore.

They also offer brunch cruises, dinner cruises, and even Santa Cruises during the holiday season.

Rent a Boat and Spend the Day on the Water

Marina Bay is the most popular spot on the lake to rent speed boats, pontoons, and tubes. They have a variety of options to choose from and go through a full orientation before sending you out on the water.

If you would rather rent a WaveRunner for a couple hours on the water, head to Jerry’s Majestic Marine. They also offer charter 35’ cruiser boat trips for up to 15 people. These include a captain so you don’t have to worry about driving and can focus instead on having fun!

Now that you’ve scoped out the estates on the boat tour, you can get close up views of those drool-worthy homes by walking through the historic Shore Path along Geneva Lake.

The entire path is more than 20 miles, so pick a portion and explore! The easiest way to access the path is from right behind the library. Plus you can peep at the library’s cool architecture from Frank Lloyd Wright protégé, James R. Dresser.

As you walk along the path you will get up-close views of these amazing homes along the water. Each homeowner is responsible for maintaining their portion of the path so you will see it change from paved stone to gravel to brick and a multitude of other surfaces along the way.

Opened in 1897, the Yerkes Observatory has been a destination for some of the most famous astronomers and scientists to study the skies, including Albert Einstein and Carl Sagan. It houses the world’s largest refracting telescope, a marvel of 19th-century engineering and is known as the birthplace of modern astrophysics

The building itself is an architectural treasure, designed by Henry Ives Cobb, who was commissioned by Charles Tyson Yerkes, a streetcar and transportation magnate of Chicago who made his immense wealth after the Great Chicago Fire. It is designed in Beaux-Arts style, with plenty of whimsical nods to Yerkes on the exterior among the many intricate stone carvings.

At one point, the observatory was threatened by a housing development but thankfully, the community rallied to save this incredible structure. Public tours are available and seeing this impressive telescope in person is highly recommended. Try to visit during one of the night sky viewing sessions but be sure to book well in advance as they are quite popular.

Cook Together at the Lake Geneva School of Cooking

Lake Geneva School of CookingLake Geneva School of Cooking

It is impossible to not have a great time at the Lake Geneva School of Cooking thanks to Chef John Bogan whose energy and enthusiasm is sure to make a chef out of even the most kitchen-avoidant members of your group.

When I visited, I had the pleasure of learning how to make a delicious ratatouille with sausage and creme brulee for dessert. We had a blast and the chef did a great job keeping the light-hearted atmosphere going and the wine flowing. It was a wonderful bonding experience and everyone had a role in the kitchen that they felt comfortable with.

There are lots of different class themes that you can sign up for, including one where you shop the Farmers Market before making your meal. Families with younger children will want to sign up for the Sunday Family Suppers or the Kids Cuisine classes.

Some of these courses have been designed by the likes of famed PGAers like Arnold Palmer and Lee Trevino. But fear not- there is plenty of room for kids to get involved in golfing culture in Lake Geneva,

Want to watch the kids work on their golf skills, while you relax and have a drink? Just five minutes away from downtown Lake Geneva, the Geneva National Resort & Club offers a drop-in clinic on Wednesdays where kids ages 7-15 can sharpen their golf skills, or learn the basics.

The gold club also offers three-day summer camps for kids as young as six. This is a great way to introduce your kids to the sport or keep the kids busy while you head off to enjoy some adult time.

Geneva Lake Museum in Wisconsin Geneva Lake Museum in Wisconsin

At the Geneva Lake Museum, visitors are able to take a stroll through the brick-lined streets of Geneva Lake’s Main Street during the late 19th and early 20th century. Walk into a classroom as it was back in the days, sit in a fire engine, or compare kitchens with and without electricity.

The museum is well thought out and most of the artifacts are authentic. Ask for an I-Spy worksheet when you arrive to keep young kids busy and entertained while learning at the same time!.

Explore Downtown

Chocolate shop in downtown Lake GenevaChocolate shop in downtown Lake Geneva

Downtown Lake Geneva is full of charm and great shopping. Kids will love Allison Wonderland, a toy store field with plenty of toys from trusted brands, dress up clothes, and games. They will also enjoy picking their own scents and colors as they pour their own candle at The Candle Merchantile.

And, if your kids are anything like mine, you won’t get out of the downtown area without a stop in Kilwin’s Chocolates. They have all sorts of homemade treats including ice cream fudge, and some seriously tasty (and huge!) candy apples.

My favorite store was the Market of Lake Geneva on Main Street which is filled with handmade goods from local artisans. I found more than a few gifts for friends and family while I was there. There are several little stores within this marketplace, including a rock and crystal shop.

Farmer's Market Lake GenevaFarmer's Market Lake Geneva

If you visit downtown on a Thursday, you will definitely want to stroll through the Lake Geneva Farmer’s Market which takes place from 8am – 1pm at Horticultural Hall from May through October. I found all sorts of food and gifts to take home here as well. There are also seasonal Farmer’s Markets in the Lake Geneva area on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Hike at the Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy

As Geneva Lake’s largest watershed, Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy is one not to be missed. Kishwauketoe in Potawatomi means “clear water” or “lake of the sparkling water” and after seeing the streams we no doubt agree with the name.

This hike offers a boardwalk, a climbing tower, a prairie, a kids play area, and more to make it an interesting hike for kids. There are five different loops to explore, ranging in length from one to three miles.

Though many may associate visiting Lake Geneva with warm weather months, winter is still a fantastic time to visit. During the holidays and winter, Lake Geneva transforms into a winter wonderland offering plenty of fun including holiday activities, Winterfest, outdoor activities, and more.

About 35 minutes north of Lake Geneva is Old World Wisconsin, an open-air museum which depicts the lives of the immigrants that settled Wisconsin.

During the holiday season, visit Old World Wisconsin to participate in traditions that immigrants brought to Wisconsin. Tour the Yuletide Village on a horse-drawn carriage, meet a Victorian Santa Claus, or make traditional Vanocka braided bread. Imagine life as it was around the 1800s as you sip on tea and nibble on tea sandwiches during the Victorian Tea at the historic Baker House.

Where to Eat (and Drink) in Lake Geneva

If there’s one thing you can count on, it’s never going hungry in Lake Geneva. As a matter of fact, I spent my entire time in the region satisfied and stuffed!

Popeye’s on Lake Geneva

You can always count on good food at Popeye’s on Lake Geneva. Start with chicken nachos with wonton chips or the crab rangoon appetizer. Try their rotisserie chicken roasted on their very own outdoor rotisserie. Their shrimp bisque is quite tasty as well.

But seriously, everything you try will be good! It gets busy, but with over 600 seats, waiting is never too long. This spot is located across the street from the marina so it is a great place to head to after your boat tour.

240° West

Abbey Resort SaladAbbey Resort Salad

If you are planning a special night out, head to the signature restaurant at the Abbey Resort, 240° West. Executive Chef Luis Quezada wowed us all with his amazing dishes which focus on using ingredients from local sources.

The restaurant has wonderful views of Lake Geneva and a warm interior that I would describe as upscale yet rustic. Menu highlights include the short rib pappardelle, a variety of steak cuts, and the eggplant ratatouille. Rest assured, they have a kids menu and families are welcome.

1878 on the Lake

Another meal that didn’t disappoint was our memorable dinner at 1878 on the Lake, the signature restaurant at Lake Lawn Resort. Open for three meals daily, this restaurant has a focus on steak and seafood. Start with the roasted beet salad or Wisconsin beer cheese soup and make sure to indulge in sides like cauliflower and cheddar gratin.

Definitely make room for dessert because they have mud pie, tiramisu, rhubarb creme brulee, and flourless chocolate decadence. I sampled several desserts and they were all insanely good.

I love coffee, but even more so if it’s coffee with a purpose. Not only is Inspired Coffee Shop’s mission to “empower adults with disabilities to live with greater purpose and achieve their individual best in a thriving environment” inspiring, but their coffee is delicious. Tip: Try the Lake Geneva Coffee Roast sourced from a local roastery.

As Geneva Lake’s only restaurant on the water, Pier 290 is the perfect place to enjoy lakefront views with good food. They have plenty of outdoor seating and evening a sandy beach area with firepits. Come for brunch on the weekend and indulge in housemade corned beef hash.

Lunch options include a variety of salads and sandwiches as well as fish tacos and burgers. Dinner is more upscale with fish and steak entrees as the stars of the menu, but a kids menu is offered all day long so your picky eaters will be happy with grilled cheese or chicken fingers, too. If the weather is nice be sure to sit outside and enjoy the lakefront views.

If the weather may not be suited for the beach, you can still have a warm water getaway by heading to Moose Mountain Falls at Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark.

Timber Ridge is an all-suite hotel, with one-bedroom to two-bedroom options that are all equipped with kitchens, fireplaces, and separate living areas.

Guests of the resort can enjoy the waterpark with over 50,000 square feet of splash-tastic fun. Thrill-seekers will definitely enjoy the two gigantic heated waterslides, but my family prefers lounging around on the lazy river surrounding the waterpark.

Little ones will busy themselves by splashing away in the Tiny Timbers area with zero-depth entry, little slides, swings, and mushroom fountain. The obstacle rope course is always a fun time.

Beyond the waterpark, there is an arcade, mini golf course, basketball, tennis, horseback riding and children-focused programming via Camp Timber, the resident kid’s club.
