Make learning letters fun with these free alphabet roll and cover the letter games! They are perfect for literacy centers in pre-k and kindergarten.
Alphabet Roll & Cover
Your kids will love these alphabet roll and cover games. Kids get to roll dice and cover letters as they go! It’s a fun race to cover the mats before their partner. They can also work as a team to cover the board before a timer runs out.
Of course, a race doesn’t have to be involved, but many kids are motivated by a challenge!
This alphabet roll and cover game will help students identify uppercase and lowercase letters. There are game boards to work on both sets individually and a combination of both.
Not only does it help students with letter recognition, but it also builds their skills in cooperation, taking turns, sportsmanship, and counting. They must count the dots (or pips) on the dice.

How to Play the Roll & Cover Game
To play this roll and cover game, students roll the die and count the dots. Then they find the corresponding letter on the mat and cover one instance of the letter with a manipulative. They continue rolling and covering letters until all the letters are covered on their mat.
If students are playing with a partner, they can play the game on one game board by having each student use their own color or type of manipulative while trying to get 4 in a row on the board before the other player does.
Another option is to use play dough to cover the spots on the printable mat. This builds fine motor muscles, too!
However you use them, students will love learning about letters with these adorable letter mats.
Differentiation Ideas
Do you have students who need more of a challenge? Have students use a recording sheet to write down the letters as they find them. This helps with letter formation!
Students who need more help with this activity can work with a partner to find the letters and cover them.
This could also be used during small group instruction and the student who covers 4 letters in a row first, wins.
Grab the alphabet roll and cover mats to make learning letters lots of fun! With these mats, your students will love working on their upper and lowercase letter recognition skills. They’ll have them mastered in no time.
