Here in my daycare, when we’ve made a homemade gift for the parents, I often have my kids make homemade gift wrapping paper to wrap their gift in. It’s a cost-free way to wrap a gift and a homemade gift from a child is all the more precious when it’s wrapped in paper that the child has put his or her creative efforts into making.
Creative gift-wrapping idea for kids
We’ve made lots of homemade wrapping paper over the years, and today, I’m sharing the DIY wrapping paper that my toddlers and preschoolers made to wrap their homemade Father’s Day gifts in. They actually used the process to make matching homemade gift cards to go with their Father’s Day gifts too.
The process was creative and fun and their finished wrapped gifts looked gorgeous.
The kids were so proud to present their Dads, not only with his homemade gift, but one wrapped so beautifully in paper they’d made themselves.
We made our homemade gift wrapping paper with coloured ice pops. We’d been painting with homemade frozen paint pops that I’d made with liquid water colours.
It was a fun art activity, and the kids’ paintings were so beautiful, I asked the them if they’d like to use the process to make some gift wrap for their Father’s Day gifts.
They thought it sounded like a great idea, so we swapped out the white cardboard for some appropriately sized paper and got to work.
Homemade Gift-Wrapping Paper with Coloured Paint Pops
I gave each hooligan a piece of paper from an artist’s sketch pad. Watercolour paper would probably be great too. The sketch paper was just thick enough to absorb the melting colours without becoming soggy, but not too stiff to wrap with.
Make a matching homemade gift card too!
I also gave them each a smaller piece which would serve as a gift card.
They made the most beautiful designs with their ice pops.

If your kids haven’t painted with coloured ice before, you have to give it a try it. It’s a wonderfully relaxing art activity and rather mesmerizing. If your kids are anything like my daycare hooligans, they’ll love it.
We left our wrapping paper to dry in the sun while we went off to find some coloured raffia and the homemade paper weights that the children made for their Dads for Father’s Day.

The kids wrapped their paper weights and wrote or drew messages in their gift cards, and I helped them secure their gift card to their gifts with a piece raffia.
