Fall Decomposing Numbers Mat Math Activity
This number sense activity is just what you need to get your students practicing their math skills. Add it to your math center for practice with counting, addition, number recognition, composing and decomposing numbers, one-to-one correspondence, and fine motor practice!
There are two apple tree mats (one in black-and-white and the other in color) to decompose any number. Each mat has a spot to place a number and write a simple addition equation.
Differentiating the Number Sense Mats
Students will use their apple tree decomposing mats to break apart the number on the two trees. Then, they will write the equation in the spaces at the bottom.
They can be adapted to meet the needs of students at a huge variety of levels! Use for numbers 0-10 or teen numbers and more!
You can easily place base ten blocks on each side to make higher numbers.
Fun Apple Tree Math Activity
You will print the mats and slide them into a write-and-wipe pocket or laminate for durability. Then, gather some counting manipulatives, dry-erase markers, and number tiles!
No cutting, coloring, or gluing is required! From one print-out, your students will practice their number recognition, addition, counting, one-to-one correspondence, and fine motor skills!

How to Use the Number Mats with Students
Here’s how students will use the mats once they are prepared!
- Write a number on the square in the middle of the mat or put a number tile. You could also make your number tiles for any numbers you want. This time we used 10-sided dice and foam cubes that I wrote numbers on.
- Place the corresponding number of counters (mini erasers, buttons, etc.) on the apple trees placing some on one tree and some on the other.
- Write an equation to match the trees at the bottom of the mat.
More Simple Ways to Use the Mats
If students aren’t ready to write equations, just have them choose numbers and break them into parts. We also like to use number tiles to fill in the equations.
You can choose to use any numbers you would like to as well. For students learning teen numbers or higher, I like to use base-ten blocks on the mats. Students will place tens on the left tree and ones on the right tree.
You can also have students write down their equations on a sheet of paper to serve as a recording sheet for this number sense activity.
Place these in math centers or morning tubs. They are also great for math small groups to help students with specific skills.
