Turn a pair of your infant’s socks into a set of miniature Christmas stockings to hang on your Christmas tree. Every year when you hang your keepsake ornament you’ll be reminded of just how tiny your child used to be.
To preserve the size of your child’s hand as a Christmas ornament, see our easy felt handprint mitten ornaments.
See the little red sock ornament in the picture below? I got it years ago as a little add-on when I bought a bottle of something at the grocery store or liquor store. It’s very cute, and I hang it on my tree every year, but because I have no sentimental attachment to this ornament, I’ve never given it much thought.
A reminder of how tiny your child once was
This year, when I was placing it on the tree, I stopped and really looked at it, and it occurred to me that this tiny sock is an actual baby sock that someone’s turned into a Christmas decoration. I don’t know how that didn’t occur to me before.
Then I thought “Jeepers! Wouldn’t it be brilliant for parents to preserve their OWN babies’ socks as Christmas ornaments?”
It would be totally easy to do! Just add some white trim and a few shiny gems, and any baby sock can become a precious keepsake ornament.
Just think of how special it will be years from now, when you’re decorating the tree with your child, and you come across this ornament. Both of you will marvel at how much they’ve grown and how tiny their little feet once were.
Instructions:
Because I don’t have an infant of my own, I picked up some baby socks at the dollar store so I could share this idea with you. You can do the same if you’re doing this craft with your daycare children or the students in your classroom.

How to turn baby socks into a Christmas stocking keepsake ornament
- Add fluffy trim
Stretch a cotton ball or a small piece of quilt batting along the top edge of each sock and glue in place.
- Add decorations
Glue small gems or sequins to the front of each sock.
- Add yarn for hanging
Use a plastic sewing needle to add some yarn to the top of the sock for hanging.
You can join the two socks together with one piece of yarn like we did, or you can string each one separately, and make 2 individual keepsake stocking ornaments.
And just like that, you now have a precious keepsake ornament to enjoy for years and perhaps pass down to your child one day.
As I’ve been writing this, it occurred to me that I saved a pair of my own boys’ baby socks for their time capsules when they were little. I have to get those out and make a set of these keepsake ornaments for each of them!
