Consonant Blend Missing Sounds Mats
These consonant blend word building mats are so fun to use and have so many benefits for your kindergarten or first-grade students.
They will give them lots of practice with important phonemic awareness and phonics skills like phoneme isolation, word mapping, spelling words with blends and more.
All of the mats feature CCVC or CVCC words with short vowel sounds. This makes them a great choice for students who have moved beyond CVC words and are working on words with consonant blends.
Easy Prep Phonemic Awareness Activity
This activity is perfect for literacy centers, small groups, or whole-group instruction in the classroom.
There are four mats included, each with five words on it. Two of the mats have missing beginning blend sounds, and two have missing ending blend sounds. This is a great activity for students progressing in their literacy journey and working on words with blends.
Students will identify the picture that is at the beginning of the line. Then they will use letter manipulatives to practice adding phonemes to build the word pictured. They could use magnetic letters or letter beads to build the words or use a dry-erase marker while the mats are inside of write and wipe pockets.
This continues until they have built all the words on the mat.
Setting Up the Blend Word Missing Sounds Mats

Supplies needed:
- Blends Missing Sound Mats (button at the bottom of the post to get them)
- Alphabet letter tiles, letter beads, magnetic letters, or another letter manipulative
- Write and wipe pockets or lamination (optional)
Instructions:
- Print the word-building mats.
- Then, laminate or slide into write and wipe pockets.
- Gather letter tiles or letter manipulatives of your choice.
- Store the activity in a large baggie, file folder, or storage tray.
Using This Blend Words Phonics Activity
Students will apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to segment the word pictured into individual phonemes and then fill in the missing sounds to complete the word.
To begin, students will look at the picture and say the name of the word pictured. Then, they will segment each sound in the word and place the letters corresponding to the missing sounds in the empty boxes.
Finally, they will blend the sounds together to read the word they built and check if it matches the pictured word.
Do this a few times as a class or in small groups so students get the hang of it before working independently.
Differentiating for Phonics Instruction
This missing sounds activity is extremely versatile and can be used in various ways. Additionally, you can adapt it to fit your schedule and lesson plans and the needs of the different learning styles in the classroom.
If your students need more scaffolding with phoneme segmentation, you can assign fewer mats to complete until they are more confident in their skills. Model using them during teacher time before sending them off to work independently. Students rocking their reading skills can complete more mats.

Students can also write the words they build on another sheet of paper while getting additional practice with spelling and writing the words.
