Oh my gosh! We had so much fun making these cardboard Valentines cookies today! The girls who made them were 9, 12 and 13, so if you have older kids or an after-school program, this activity will be a huge hit with your gang. If you have younger kids, go for it. They’ll love it too.

“Icing” and “sprinkles”…
We got so creative, painting our cookies a butter-cream colour and decorating each cookie differently. We used several different colours of paint for our icing, and we had fun making sprinkles from yarn, pipe cleaners and paper confetti.
They look so real!
This afternoon, I had them displayed on a plate for some of the photos you see here, and every time I caught a glimpse of them out of the corner of my eye, I thought they were real.

The inspiration for this cardboard cookie craft was this cardboard sugar cookie craft we made last month as a Christmas tree ornament. They were so beautiful, I knew then that we’d have to do a similar craft for Valentines Day.
Ok! Here’s how we made them!
Supplies:
- medium-weight cardboard
- heart-shaped cookie cutter or stencil (for tracing)
- pencil
- scissors
- paint and paintbruhes
- paint (we use acrylic craft paint)
- for the sprinkles: yarn, pipe cleaners, coloured paper and hole punch
Instructions:
How to make Cardboard Valentines Cookies
- Cut out hearts
Trace a heart on to a piece of cardboard and cut it out.
- Paint Cookie
Paint your cookie a cream colour, so it resembles a sugar cookie. We mixed DecoArt “Vanilla” with DecoArt “Butter” to get our cream colour.
Tip: If you want your icing to look puffy, add some white glue to your paint. Bonus: your sprinkles will stick without needing any additional glue.
- Apply icing paint
Paint any additional details such as lace trim, polka dots etc. The end of a paintbrush is great for dotting polka dots.
- Add sprinkles
Glue “sprinkles” to your cookies.
We made a variety of sprinkles for our cookies:
– yarn into small pieces
– cleaners into small pieces
– confetti we made with a paper punch and coloured card stock
And that, my friends, is all there is to making these scrumptious looking cardboard Valentines cookies.
What a fun way for kids to turn a few basic craft supplies into somethign spectacular.
