If you’ve followed Toddler Approved for awhile then you know we love to create silly games to go along with any theme. We did a Feed the Shark Alphabet game for our Ocean Week and we made a Feed the LEGO Monsters color sorting game during our LEGO Week.
My itty bitty toddler loves playing with my giant bucket of lids. A few weeks ago we did a toddler lid dump and drop activity and she was in heaven for 20 minutes. 20 minutes in baby time is like 2 hours!!
To tie in with our Easter theme this week for our A Very Toddler Easter series I thought we could Feed the Bunny! We grabbed our handy dandy bucket of lids and had a blast!
HUNT DOWN A CEREAL BOX
Get started by hunting down a big cereal box. If you don’t eat cereal, find a cardboard box that you want to turn into a bunny. Cereal boxes are way easier to cut, so I prefer those, but more sturdy cardboard boxes are better if your toddler is of a more destructive nature… so pick your poison.
GRAB THESE QUICK MATERIALS
- double sided tape
- scissors
- cardboard box/cereal box
- white or brown roll of paper
- markers
PREP AHEAD
Before your kids are wrapped around your legs begging for something fun to do, prep this activity ahead of time so that you can whip it out and have fun together.
Start by cutting out a small or large mouth from the cereal box. I started with small rectangular hole but then adapted it as I noticed the smaller opening was trickier for my daughter to get the lids back out by herself.
Once you have the mouth cut, wrap the entire box up in white or brown paper like you are wrapping a present. Tape the paper in place and then cut/poke through paper to reveal the mouth hole. You can add a little tape around the mouth to make it extra secure and avoid ripping.
Next, use any cardboard you have lying around to cut out some bunny ears and then cover them with white paper too. Secure the ears in place with some tape or glue. Add some pink accents to the ears and a face to the bunny with markers and then you are ready to play!
During this activity we talked about the colors and worked on simple fine motor skills like grabbing and maneuvering small things. My daughter found it difficult to twist the lids the right way to fit into the rectangular opening. It was neat to watch as she tinkered and tried to problem solve… and then eventually got the lids to fit in the hole.
MAKE AN ALPHABET FEED THE BUNNY GAME FOR OLDER KIDDOS
If your kiddo is beyond chatting about colors and just stuffing lids in a bunny’s mouth, try upping the difficulty of this activity and writing Alphabet letters on the lids.
My preschooler loved hunting for the letters as I called them out. We also tried the version where I would say the name of something and he would try and find the letter that the word began with and then stuff it into the bunny’s mouth. This is a great activity if your kid needs a challenge. You can also use this version if you just want to provide exposure to alphabet letters. While your child stuffs the letters into the bunny’s mouth you could make him aware of the name of the letter. Easy peasy!
