If your kids love making their own Christmas tree ornaments, this easy to make colorful paper star christmas tree decoration is just the thing to make. You can have the kids use paper circles or other shapes to make this one and it provides a great fine motor skill.
You can use paper circles from the paper hole punches to make this one as well, making sure no paper goes to waste. It’s the best way to use them up.

For larger circles, we recommend using a hole punch (most craft stores have them). If you don’t have it, this craft will look just as pretty even if you use squares or other hand cut shapes to decorate the stars.
Turn this into eco-concious project. Use cereal (or similar) boxes to cut out the base and old ribbon pieces almost all of us have laying around the home somewhere.
How to Make the Colorful Paper Star Christmas Tree Decoration
What you need:
- printable template (optional)
- circle paper punch or paper circles from a hole puncher
- a piece of cardboard
- scissors
- pencil
- marker
- glue
- color paper
Step by Step Tutorial
Begin by grabbing a piece of cardboard in your desired size. This will serve as the base for your Christmas tree star decoration.
Draw or have kids draw a star onto it.
If you are working with younger kids, we recommend making the star outline with a black marker. This will make it easier for them to cut it out.
Cut or have the kids cut out the star.
To create a loop for hanging your decoration, have kids glue a red ribbon to the top part of the star.
Prepare a variety of colored paper and punch out many paper circles.
These circles will fill the inside of your star, creating a festive and vibrant appearance.
Have your kids glue on the tiny circles along the inner edge of the star, one by one (one a bit over the other so they overlap).
If you are working with circles from the hole puncher, apply a generous amount of glue on the paper star and sprinkle the small circles over it. Press down, allow for the glue to set and repeat.
Glue the colorful circles within the star until the inner space is filled.
Feel free to create patterns or random designs to make your ornament unique.
You can decorate it on both sides.
Allow the glue to dry completely before hanging your colorful paper star Christmas tree decoration on your tree.
This fun and festive craft is perfect for adding a personal touch to your holiday decor.
You can make as many as you wish using our different star templates.
