Digraph Missing Sound Mats
These digraph word building mats are so fun to use and have so many benefits for your kindergarten or first-grade students.
If your students know their letter sounds and have mastered CVC words, moving on to phonics instruction with digraphs is a great next step.
Digraphs are combinations of two letters that, when combined, represent one sound. Ch and Sh are examples. They can appear at the beginning or the end of words! You might see it at the start of a word, such as CHeese. They are also at the end of words, like fiSH!
Digraph Word Building Mats
Students will identify the picture that is at the beginning of the line. Then they will use letter manipulatives to practice adding phonemes to build the word pictured. They could use magnetic letters or letter beads to build the words or use a dry-erase marker while the mats are inside of write and wipe pockets.
This continues until they have built all the words on the mat.
I love this phonics activity because it gives students a hands-on way to practice phonemic awareness and phonics skills. This would be a great resources for small group instruction or for use during centers.
There are 10 words included, 5 words for beginning digraphs and 5 words for ending digraphs. All of the words are CCVC or CVCC words for students who are just beginning to read and spell words with digraphs.

Using This Digraphs Phonics Activity
Students will apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to segment the digraph word pictured into individual phonemes and then fill in the missing sound by matching that sound to the letters that make it.
Students will look at the pictures and they will say the name of the word pictured. Then, they will segment each sound in the word and place the letters that corresponds to the digraph sound in the empty box.
If you don’t want students using letter manipulatives, you can laminate your mats so students can use dry erase markers and practice writing the letter that is missing.
Finally, they will blend the sounds together to read the word they built and check to see if it matches the word pictured. I love these missing letter mats because students can practice identifying letters, sounds, and words.
