Well, these Easter egg painted rocks are incredible ideas for all of those things and many more!
I have quite a rock collection. When my boys were little, they would find so many “treasures” in our yard, on nature walks, and pretty much wherever they’d go. These treasures were often a mix of sticks, leaves, pebbles, and rocks.
Sticks and leaves would stay outside but “the most special” pebbles and rocks would make it indoors. The boys would carefully wash off their treasures and add to their stashes.
One rock caught my oldest’s eye. He couldn’t believe how much it looked like an Easter egg. We got out paints and he transformed that rock into a beautiful decoration that we still have. And it turned into a wonderful homeschool Easter project for all of my boys.
Suggested Supplies for This Easter Activity
You really only need a few materials to enjoy this painted rock project. I’ll add a few extra supplies if you’d like to keep it as mess-free as possible. For the basics, you’ll need:
- Rocks
- Paint
- Paintbrushes
- Qtips
You can buy pre-washed rocks at a craft or dollar store. This option is nice if you’re working with a group (like a classroom or library even) or don’t have time to wash and dry the rocks.
If you’re washing your rocks, I recommend doing this step outside if at all possible. If not, place a towel or old plastic tablecloth under a bucket or bin. Provide small brushes to scrub. Lay out a few towels to place your clean, wet rocks. You can place a fan by the rocks to help them dry quicker.
To paint, some additional supplies that can be helpful include a foam brush, tempera paint sticks (like Kwik Stix), and paint markers.
How to Make These Easter Egg Painted Rocks
Gather all of the supplies that you’ll be using for this project. Talk with your students about Easter eggs and common colors, designs, and patterns.
Wash and dry the rocks.
Towel dry the rocks and place on clean surface. If you’d like to speed up the drying process, place in front of a fan.
Add paint to palette or paper plate.
Give each egg a base coat on both sides. Light colors like pink and yellow might need a second coat. Allow time to dry.
Add details.
When eggs are completely dry, dip Q-tip or paint brush into paint and add accents. It can be helpful to change up colors. Use brushes for lines and Q-tips to add polka dots.
Frequently Asked Questions About Easter Painted Rocks
You can use smooth, flat rocks or pebbles for this project. River rocks work great because they have a smooth surface, but any rock with a relatively flat and clean surface will work! If your kids would like their eggs to have some bumps (my middle boys always did!), pick rocks that have some texture.
Acrylic paint is best for painting rocks as it adheres well and offers bright, vibrant colors. If you’re using rocks that will be kept outside (like in a garden), consider using outdoor acrylic paint or adding a weatherproof sealant at the end.
I say go for it! Markers or paint pens are great alternatives for more detailed designs or for younger kids who may have trouble with paintbrushes. You can even use glitter pens or glitter glue for a sparkly touch!
To help the paint stick better, you can lightly sand the rocks using sandpaper before starting. A quick wash to remove dirt and debris is also helpful. Let the rocks dry completely before painting to prevent any moisture from affecting the paint.
After your rocks have dried and you’re happy with the design, you can seal them with a clear acrylic sealer. This step will help protect your paint from chipping and will also make them weather-resistant (if you’re placing them outside).
If your rocks are smaller (like actual egg size), you can gently wrap in tissue paper or paper towels and place in an empty egg carton. My boys used old shoe boxes to wrap and store larger painted eggs.
