We’ve made a lot of Christmas tree crafts over the years, and this one is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Remember our Ribbon Heart Valentine’s cards? Well, we’ve used the same process to make these ribbon trees.
Unlike traditional ribbon scrap Christmas tree ornaments, which are great for older kids and adults to make, there’s no tying involved in making our ribbon Christmas tree craft. With these ornaments, kids will glue scraps of ribbon to a piece of cardboard to make their Christmas trees.
Although this Christmas craft is geared towards toddlers and preschoolers, older kids will enjoy the process too.
Whether you’re a toddler or a tween, sorting through a collection of ribbon scraps is always a treat. Kids love exploring ribbon textures, colours and patterns.
Plus, painting the cardboard adds another level of creativity to this easy craft. Young kids can paint freely, as they do, and older kids can get more creative blending or stippling the colours for their tree.

Scrap Ribbon Christmas Tree Ornaments
Supplies:
- Cardboard (a cereal box is perfect for this kind of thing)
- green paint/paint brush
- ribbon scraps
- button or craft gem
- glue
- scissors
- thread or cord for hanging
Making your ornaments:
To start, cut a triangle out of a cereal box or a similar weight of cardboard.
Then have the kids paint their cardboard green. Older kids may want to experiment with their painting technique to add dimension and interest to their tree. For example, they can blend several shades of green or stipple, pounce or splatter their colour on.
When the paint is dry, have the children glue strips of ribbon across their tree. Older kids can apply the glue straight from the bottle, but younger kids may want to use a paintbrush to apply their glue.
Trim any excess ribbon from around the edges of the cardboard.
For a make-shift “star”, have the kids glue a button or a craft gem to the top of the tree.
Attach a piece of thread or cord for hanging.
It’s such a simple craft, but it gives the kids an opportunity to get creative using interesting textures and patterns, and it makes good use of those bits and pieces of ribbon you’ve been hanging on to.
