These Styrofoam and Button Christmas Trees are very simple to make. They’re a little easier than our styrofoam Christmas tree table toppers, so they’re perfect for a last-minute Christmas craft for the kids at home or in the classroom.

The supplies are basic, and these ornaments are easy enough for toddlers and preschoolers to do with very little assistance.

The inspiration behind these sweet little ornaments came from School Time Snippet’s Button Snowmen Puzzle!
When I saw their colourful buttons glued to stark white paper, I thought immediately that the look would be great for a Christmas tree ornament.
Knowing how much the hooligans love to make Christmas ornaments, I adapted the idea for this easy craft.

Using styrofoam meat trays for crafting:
I love using styrofoam produce trays for crafting. We use them in a lot of our projects. Check out our meat tray mosaics, styrofoam stars, snowman art and our fall collages to see a few.
Crafting with styrofoam trays saves them from going into the landfill, and they’re free, and if your house is like mine, they accumulate quickly, so there’s never a shortage of them. They come in all kinds of colours too. White, black, blue, yellow and red are common around here.
Tip: Just be sure to run the trays through the dishwasher, to sterilize them, before using them for your crafts.
Instructions for Styrofoam and Button Christmas Tree Ornaments:
Cut a triangle out of your styrofoam. You can do this using a craft knife and cutting mat but it’s just as easy to use scissors because the styrofoam is quite thin.
Have your kids apply a generous amount of glue to the buttons themselves or all over the front of their triangle.
Then have them decorate their little tree with all the buttons they can fit on. Gluing the buttons on the styrofoam is great for developing fine motor skills.
You can get in some colour learning too if you ask them to identify the colours of the buttons that they’re gluing to their ornament.
You can also talk about the different sizes of the buttons you’re working with.
To hang your ornament, you’ll need to attach a piece of string or ribbon to your ornament.
I used a glue gun to attach a ribbon “loop” to the back of the tree, but you could punch a hole in the top, and thread your string or ribbon through.
