A set of YARN WRAPPED STAR ORNAMENTS makes a lovely, inexpensive Christmas gift for a neighbour, friend or teacher. These simple star ornaments are easy enough for kids to make, and they won’t cost you a thing if you have a spare ball of yarn on hand.
I love giving small but thoughtful Christmas gifts to the people who make a difference in our lives, but it can get expensive if you have to buy those gifts.
Several years ago, I made about a dozen sets of these yarn wrapped star ornaments and gave them to my friends, my kids’ teachers, the school bus driver and a few neighbours. They cost me nothing to make because I already had the wool.
I packaged them up in sets of five, along with a few homemade Christmas cookies, and they were very well-received.
Recently it occurred to me that this would be a great Christmas craft for my daycare hooligans to make for their own Christmas trees or to give to someone special. We’ve made a number of yarn-wrapped crafts in the past, and they always enjoy the process.
Plus, they love rummaging through our big collection of scrap yarn. The colours and textures always fascinate them.

How to make our Easy Yarn Wrapped Star Ornaments
Supplies:
- yarn
- thick cardboard
- pencil
- star-shaped stencil
- scissors
- glue or glue gun
- raffia or metallic thread for hanging

Making your yarn star ornaments
Start by making your cardboard stars.
I always keep cardboard inserts that come in packaging for projects like this. You could also cut up a sturdy cardboard box.
Cut out your stars
Trace a star on to your cardboard (use a cookie cutter or a stencil if you want to be exact), and cut out the star.
The hooligans actually found it easier to cut through the thick cardboard with kids’ scissors than with my sharper kitchen scissors.
Wrap your star with yarn
Once you’ve cut out your star, you can start wrapping it with yarn.
Trap the tail of your starting piece underneath the yarn as you begin to wrap.
Continue wrapping your star until the cardboard is completely covered. If you find the yarn slips off the points of the star, you may want to dab a bit of hot glue on the points to hold the yarn in place.
Alternatively, you can leave some of the cardboard exposed like we’ve done with our red and green star ornaments.
To finish, cut the yarn and secure it with a dot of glue. A glue gun works best for this.
Add a loop for hanging
To hang your star ornaments, just attach a piece of raffia or metallic thread. You can either use a hot glue gun for this, or loop it under a strand of yarn that’s wrapped around your star, and knot to secure.
Yarn wrapped star ornament is now ready to hang on the Christmas tree.
Package up matching sets to give as gifts
To give your stars as gifts, divide them into sets of 3 or 5, loop a piece of matching yarn through all of the hanging loops and make a bow to tie them all together.
