Fish Decomposing Numbers Mat Math Activity
This number sense activity is just what you need to get your students practicing their math skills. Add it to your math center for practice with counting, addition, number recognition, composing and decomposing numbers, one-to-one correspondence, and fine motor practice!
There are two fish mats (one in black-and-white and the other in color) to decompose any number. Each mat has a spot to place a number and write a simple addition equation.
Differentiating the Number Sense Mats
Students will use their fish decomposing mats to break apart the number on either side of the fish’s body. Then, they will write the equation in the spaces at the bottom.
They can be adapted to meet the needs of students at a huge variety of levels! Use for numbers 0-10 or teen numbers and more!
You can easily place base ten blocks on each side to make higher numbers.
Fun Fish Math Activity
You will print the mats and slide them into a write-and-wipe pocket or laminate for durability. Then, gather some counting manipulatives, dry-erase markers and number tiles!
No cutting, coloring, or gluing is required! From one print-out, your students will practice their number recognition, addition, counting, one-to-one correspondence, and fine motor skills!
How to Set Up the Decomposing Numbers Mat Free Printable

Supplies Needed:
- Fish Decomposing Numbers Mats (get it by clicking the button at the bottom of this post)
- Dry-erase markers
- Snap cubes, base ten blocks or another counting manipulative
- Number tiles
- Write and wipe pockets (optional)
Directions:
- Print the mats.
- Slide into write and wipe pockets for durability. You can also laminate it.
- Gather the manipulatives needed to use on the mat.
- Store in a large bag or storage container for easy access.
How to Use the Number Mats with Students
Here’s how students will use the mats once they are prepared!
- Write a number on the square in the middle of the mat or put a number tile. You could also make your number tiles for any numbers you want.
- Place the corresponding number of counters (mini erasers, buttons, etc.) on the fish, placing some on one side and some on the other.
- Write an equation to match the fish at the bottom of the mat.
More Simple Ways to Use the Mats
If students aren’t ready to write equations, just have them choose numbers and break them into parts .
Students will also love building towers and snapping them into pieces to place on either side of the fish. This will slowly build their confidence in writing equations later.
You can choose to use any numbers you would like to as well.
You can also have students write down their equations on a sheet of paper to serve as a recording sheet for this number sense activity.
