Using Fall Pattern Block Mats with Preschoolers
For young children who are just beginning with pattern blocks, the best option is to choose the coloured pattern block templates.
These pattern block mats print to scale (see the printing instructions) so children can place the correct pattern block directly onto the mat, copying the design to make the picture.
You can encourage preschoolers and extend their learning by talking about the colours and shapes of each block and show them how to ‘flip’ and ‘rotate’ block if the need to. Labelling each shape is a great early math concept to work on.
You could also encourage your preschool to count the number of pattern blocks they used, and to count how many of each colour/shape were used.
Use the fall pattern block pictures to encourage a discussion about autumn/fall, and what things make them think of summer. They could also try making their own autumn/fall pictures from the pattern blocks.
Using Fall Pattern Block Templates with Older Children.
You can use these fall pattern block printables for kindergarten and older children as a fun, hands-on maths activity. Depending on their level, older kids can use the coloured pattern block mats, or the outline pattern blocks for an extra challenge.
The outline pattern block mats print to scale (see below for printing instructions) so kids can build the pictures directly onto the mat, but they require a little extra thinking to decide which block fits the shape without the colours to help. This extra challenge is great for working on spatial awareness.
Kindergarteners and older children will be able to identify the colour of each block, name the shapes, and count the number of each shape they used to make the picture. They will also love the challenge of coming up with their own fall pattern block designs to make and share.
Free Printable Fall Pattern Block Templates.
There are four different fall pattern block templates to choose from – an apple, a leaf, some corn, and a pumpkin. Each one comes in a full colour version and a version that is just the outlines.

Instructions for Printing Pattern Block Mats
These printable pattern block mats are all A4 sized pdf files, you will need a pdf reader such as adobe acrobat to open them. They will fit to print on US ‘letter sized’ paper.
Please choose ‘Actual Size’ from your printer settings. Do not select ‘fit’ or ‘shrink to fit’ from your printer settings regardless of what size paper you are using.
