- The Declaration of Independece, also known as the founding document of the United States, is a document written in 1776 by the Continental Congress of the thirteen British North American colonies. It declared the colonies independence from Great Britain.
- It was approved by the Continental Congress of July 4, 1776, and announced the separation of 13 North American British colonies from the British Empire.
- The document asserts that all men are created equal and have unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
- 56 delegates signed the Declaration of Independence. The most famous signers of the declaration include John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Hancock, Samuel Adams, George Washington’s cousin, and Elbridge Gerry, who later become the fifth Vice President of the United States.
- New York City served as the first capital of the newly independent United States.
- Thomas Jefferson primarily wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence over several days in June 1776.
- The Declaration of Independence is considered one of the most important documents in American history and is part of the Charters of Freedom, the United States Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
- The document was printed by John Dunlap and distributed throughout the colonies, and today only 26 copies of the Declaration of Independence remain. The original Declaration of Independence is in the National Archives Museum in Washington, DC.
