Cute Way to Light Up Your Halloween Celebration
If you’re looking for a simple and frugal craft to enjoy with kids for holiday fun, you’ll love this Halloween luminary craft. This craft looks amazing and actually lights up. Plus, you can customize it and make it as spooky or cute as you like.
Oh, and you can also use this craft for a creative letter “C” craft because it features a cat!
My boys love to decorate for holidays and special events. I used to be the one that went around and adorned our home (especially our homeschool area a.k.a. dining room) with seasonal and holiday decorations. Well, I think my enthusiasm was contagious or something because my boys have taken that role over with even more excitement!
Recently, I was sifting through our boxes of DIY Halloween decorations (because my boys have made a lot of cute crafts over the years). And I found this black cat luminary craft that’s just absolutely adorable. I had to recreate it and share it with you!
Suggested Supplies for This Luminary Craft
Before jumping into this Halloween craft for kids, I encourage you to take some time to make sure that you have all of the materials that you need. This paper plate luminary only uses a few supplies so it shouldn’t take too long.
If you already have black felt and/or would rather make your own cat, use this free printable black cat template. OR you can use other Halloween-themed silhouettes, like pumpkin, witch, bat, or jack-o’-lantern.
Another idea is to use tissue paper (probably 2-3 sheets) for a colorful background.
Oh, and if you’re working with young kids or don’t have a lot of time for this activity, I recommend that you prepare the paper plate (paint and/or cut out) and paper streamers ahead of time.

How to Make This Halloween Luminary Craft
01
Prepare paper plates
Placing the two plates together, rim to rim, cut off a section about an inch thick in a straight line.
On one plate, draw a window, leaving about a one-inch border from the edge of the plate. Cut the window out of the plate.
Paint the backs of both plates black. Allow time to fully dry.
02
Prepare crepe paper streamers
Alternating colors, cut strips of crepe paper slightly longer than the window but shorter than the plate itself.
03
Glue on crepe paper strips and cat
Begin gluing the crepe paper strips with some overlap to the plate’s inside (white side). Glue the overlap together as well. Stop when there is only room for one more strip.
Glue the cat to the inside bottom of the window so that the rest of it is over the crepe paper. Add some glue to the cat and crepe paper in one or two spots for stability.
04
Glue on crepe paper strips and cat
Glue the last strip of crepe paper down.
Glue the rims of the two plates together, leaving the flat bottom section open. Allow time for the glue to fully dry.
05
Add tealight
Set the plates up standing on the flat edge. Poke a flameless tealight in between the plates.
Ideas for Making and Using Your Black Cat Luminary
Want to customize these paper plate crafts? I suggest that you put your student’s name and date (month and year works well) on the back of the luminary so you’ll have it to reference in later years.
I think using different colors of party streamers would be an easy way to customize. Use a rainbow of colors, favorite colors, or other combination. Add a touch of glitter glue for a sparkly effect.
Make smaller versions of these light-up crafts by using smaller paper plates. This idea is incredible for using your completed projects for place settings (with a name).
