Preschool Farm Animals Theme

Fall is the perfect time to complete a preschool farm animals theme, especially during October and November. The cooler weather makes it a cozy time to bundle up and enjoy a farm visit, where children can see real animals up close, from fluffy sheep to clucking chickens and playful goats. We played a fun Farm Animals Bingo game using our free printable which got everyone engaged and excited about a farm theme. It was also a great way to expand vocabulary and talk about the different animals that live on a farm!

Farm Animals Directed Drawing Guides

My daughter loved the How to Draw a Sheep directed drawing printable, so I created this Farm Animals Mini Book which includes 13 unique drawing tutorials, including a cover page. They contain easy step-by-step instructions that are visual so even beginners and kids who can’t read as yet can try their hand at it. Here is what’s included in the free printable:

  • How to Draw a Cow
  • How to Draw a Turkey
  • How to Draw a Duck
  • How to Draw a Hen
  • How to Draw an Ox
  • How to Draw a Rooster
  • How to Draw a Donkey
  • How to Draw a Chick
  • How to Draw a Goat
  • How to Draw a Horse
  • How to Draw a Pig
  • How to Draw a Sheep

Drawing guides are a fun way to help kids learn to focus and follow simple instructions—and they’re great for relaxing, too! Directed drawing is all about taking things step-by-step, which makes it a wonderful mindfulness activity to calm little minds. Plus, it’s a great way to enhance fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. I find this particularly helpful for kids who are learning how to write as they become more familiar and comfortable with holding crayons and pencils.

Resources and Tips

  • Use my easy How to Bind A Book tutorial and create the perfect mini book. It is a wonderful keepsake and even has a cover page where each child can write their own name.
  • Combine this activity with other farm-themed activities such as these 21+ Farm Animal Activities For Preschoolers to create the perfect unit. It has everything you need including hands-on math and literacy activities, animal facts and discussion pages, and so much more!
  • Encourage the kids to ask questions and work at their own pace. This will create a supportive environment.
  • Each page is also titled ‘I can draw a…’ to foster self-confidence. Provide positive feedback – kids benefit from encouragement and positive affirmations.
  • Display the drawings on a wall, in the classroom, or on your fridge. I also like to set up a Farm Sensory Bin for the kids alongside this activity for added sensory play.
