Simple and Frugal Way to Color Your Easter Eggs
Are you getting ready for Easter fun with children and want a cool way to dye your eggs? Maybe you’re planning an Easter event and need an affordable activity for kids of all ages? Perhaps you want to try something different this year that lets your students be more involved in making these classic Easter decorations?
Well, these tie-dye Easter eggs are sure to be a big hit!
When my youngest was a toddler, I wasn’t sure how to get him involved in our family’s Easter egg dying tradition. He’s always been the type of child who wants to touch everything – and push limits. I knew that we wouldn’t be using anything like Easter egg kits or food coloring. I wanted to avoid even natural options (like beets or yellow onion skins) because I envisioned him trying to drink the mixture.
After working on some coffee filter crafts (like our rainbow, butterfly, and shamrock) with success, I thought tweaking those projects for dying eggs could work. And we were all so pleased with how our tie-dye Easter eggs turned out! In fact, we still like to color our Easter eggs this way.
Suggested Supplies for This DIY Easter Activity
With a bit of planning and preparation, this project is easy to put together and enjoy. Before you get started, I recommend making sure that you have:
- Hard Boiled Eggs
- Coffee Filters
- Washable Markers
- Rubber Bands
- Vinegar
- Water
- Paintbrush

How to Make Your Tie-Dye Easter Eggs
This first step will be to hard boil your eggs. Once you have boiled the eggs, let them completely cool prior to starting this activity.
Color the coffee filters with markers.
Using washable markers, add a variety of colors to the coffee filters. The very outside edges won’t touch the eggs, so they don’t need to be colored.

Wrap eggs in colored coffee filters.
Wrap the hard boiled eggs in the coffee filters. Wrap a rubber band around the top to hold it in place.

Make and paint on vinegar mix.
Mix approximately 1 teaspoon white vinegar with ½ cup water. Use a paintbrush to brush the vinegar solution all over the colored coffee filter-wrapped egg. Make sure to apply plenty of fluid so it soaks through the filter.

Dry and unwrap.
Allow time (about 10-15 minutes) for the coffee filters to dry on the eggs. Filters may be slightly damp. You can unwrap eggs to check if you’re happy with the amount of color. When you’re satisfied, unwrap the eggs and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions About Making This Project
It’s best to use washable markers for this project, as they are easier to blend and wash off. Regular markers may stain the coffee filter too much and could be harder for kids to use. If you decide to go with permanent markers, I suggest trying these materials ahead of time to see how it turns out.
The vinegar helps to set the colors. For the best results, I recommend using it. Without the vinegar, the colors may not blend or set as nicely plus the tie-dye effect might not be as vibrant. If you like to experiment, I say give it a try – and let me know how it goes!
Leave the coffee filter on the egg for about 10–15 minutes to let the colors set. If you want a more intense effect, you can leave it on a little longer. You don’t have to wait until the coffee filter completely dries. To pass the time, work on an Easter activity or read an Easter book!
Yes! This activity is a very kid-friendly project. Just make sure to supervise them when using the vinegar mixture. It’s also a good idea to have a workspace that’s easy to clean up.
