One of the coolest art projects you can do with kids in the fall is leaf spray painting art. It can be done any other time of the year as well, as long as you have leaves at hand (or conifer leaves), but it just feels better if you make it in the fall.
Go on a walk with your kids, and have them pick out a bunch of leaves from all kinds of different trees. This is also a great opportunity to teach the kids about all kinds of different trees and how to identify them.

With your leaves ready, this project can be done asap. You don’t have to dry or preserve the leaves. Fresh ones work out just as great as the dried ones.
This is a great project to do at home or in school or other large group settings.
How to Make Leaf Spray Painting Art
What you need:
- printable template (optional)
- leaves or flowers
- craft paper / art paper
- spray bottles
- craft paints
- double-sided tape (optional)
- optional: work surface protector (a larger sheet of paper, old tablecloth…)
You can get spray bottles in most dollar store like stores, craft stores, garden stores. Cosmetics stores are also great as they usually carry small plastic spray bottles which are just perfect for this project.
Step by Step Tutorial
Prepare the paints. You will need spray bottles – we do recommend using one for each paint, but you can also just use one and change the colors (you can start with yellow and add red later on to make it orange…).
Pour a small amount of paint into the bottle. Fill the bottle with water. Shake well. You can add more paint if you aren’t happy with the consistency.
We recommend using cardstock or art paper for this one. While regular paper does work, it will wrinkle.
Position the leaves or flowers on the paper.
You can use double-sided tape to secure them in place.
Why have one leaf if you can have many?
This will be just the right amount of messy, so it’s best to use a surface protector (tablecloth, newspaper, paper).
Shake the paint again.
Spritz the paint mixture onto the paper around the leaves or flowers.
You can use one color only, but these projects shine with more colors.
It’s time to spray again.
Continue with a different color.
Spray to the areas that are still blank.
We added some green as well.
Let the paint dry a little.
Carefully peel off the leaves or flowers from the paper.
Allow the artwork to dry completely.
You can then display your unique leaf spray painting masterpiece for all to admire!
Experiment with different colors and leaf shapes.
We love how it turned out!
