The glitter paper and sequins give the mermaid a sparkly look, but solid colored paper works perfectly too! Glitter glue or adhesive gems would also work well.

Choose whatever color of yarn you’d like for the hair – we used a magenta and peach shade on the mermaids shown here, but purple or teal would also look great!

3. Make the hair.

Apply a thin line of white or tacky glue around the outer and inner edges of the paper hair. Place pieces of yarn on top of each line of glue, allowing the ends to hang off the edge of the paper.

Apply more glue to the interior of the hair and continue adding pieces of yarn.

Place more yarn into the glue, cutting it as needed and following the lines of the yarn to make flowing yarn hair.

When the paper is all covered, use scissors to trim the ends. We let the yarn still overhang the edge of the paper, but just tidied up the pieces to be closer in length.

7. Add the sequins. (optional)

Glue a few green and teal sequins onto the mermaid’s tail.

This helps add some sparkle if you used solid colored paper for the tail, but you can skip this step if you used glitter paper for the tail.
