Milk Carton Haunted House Craft

Milk Carton Haunted Houses are easy to make using a cardboard milk carton, paint and a few scraps from the craft cupboard. Make one or two to stand alone or make a whole haunted village to display on a whole windowsill in your home or classroom.

2 haunted houses made from cardboard milk cartons

I’m so excited to show you our first adorable Halloween craft of the season. We made these milk carton haunted houses last week, and we’re just thrilled with the way they turned out. They’re a little bit of spooky and a whole lot of cute rolled up into one easy craft, and they’re fun for kids of all ages to make.

Make a whole haunted village

We only made a couple of haunted houses for our house, but if you’re working with a number of kids or students, they could each make one, and you’d end up with a whole haunted village to line up on the windowsill.

All you need to make this easy haunted house craft is a cardboard milk carton, some paint, and a few odds and ends from the craft cupboard. I’ll list below the odds and ends that we used, but feel free to get creative and use whatever supplies and materials you have on hand.

Not just for Halloween…

Keep this idea handy for other holidays too. In the past we’ve made Christmas gingerbread houses and Valentine’s houses using milk cartons and crafty bits and bobs.

Milk Carton Haunted House Instructions

  1. Remove Lid

Remove and discard the plastic lid of the carton if you’ll be stuffing the spout (chimney) with cotton ball “smoke”.

  2. Paint the Milk Carton

Paint the milk carton in a Halloween themed colour and let your paint dry. We chose black for our roof colour, purple paint for one house and black paint for the other house.  We used 2 coats of paint to cover up the printing on the milk carton. Pro Tip: We used a hair dryer to quickly dry the paint between coats.milk cartons painted black and purplemilk cartons painted black and purple

  3. Decorate

Once your paint is dry, you can decorate your haunted house. We cut our windows out of yellow card stock so it would look like there were lights on inside the house. We used thin strips of black construction paper to define the window panes.

Then we added our door, and then we glued foam pumpkins and bats, buttons, yarn and googly eyes etc. all over our houses. cotton ball ghost at front door of haunted housecotton ball ghost at front door of haunted house

  4. Make Ghosts and Chimney Smoke

We stretched out cotton balls to make cobwebs and ghosts and we finished by tucking a tuft of cotton into the spout to make it look like smoke was wafting up out of the chimney. Note: white tissue paper would work as well.cotton ball smoke in milk carton spoutcotton ball smoke in milk carton spout

Aren’t they just too adorable?

I hope your kids enjoy making their haunted houses as much as we enjoyed making ours! If you’re looking for more fun and easy Halloween crafts for your kids, you’ll find lots of ideas here.
