Add a Fun Touch to Your New Year’s Celebration
Need a frugal and easy activity to enjoy with your children for New Year’s Eve? Perhaps you’re getting ready for a birthday party and want DIY decorations and party favors? Or maybe you’d like a creative brain break or boredom buster for screen-free fun?
This New Year’s Eve glasses craft is an excellent option for all of those things and many more!
I love celebrating New Year’s Eve with my boys. I much prefer relaxed time at home where we can all be in comfy clothes as we await for the ball to drop. Maybe it’s the introvert in me? Or enjoying a rest after all the holiday hustle and bustle?
Since we like to spend the time at home together, I try to find different ways to make it extra fun. We use a lot of our free printable activities (like New Year’s Eve bingo, color by number pages, and word scramble). And I like to have a few hands-on projects to keep my boys busy, like games with balloons, making party poppers, homemade playdough, and crafts, like these DIY glasses.
I think one of the best things about these craft glasses is that you can make them in so many ways, with lots of different colors, sizes, and sparkles! I wanted to share this project with you, in case you need some inspiration for fun ways to add a homemade touch to your New Year’s Eve, party, or rainy day fun.
Recommended Materials for This New Year’s Eve Craft
This activity for making your own sparkly glasses uses only two materials. If you’d like your pair of glasses to look like the examples, follow the steps in this tutorial and use the same supplies. I’m also sharing tips for tweaking this craft (if you’d rather use what you have or something else).
This supplies list has 2 basic requirements:
- Kids’ Sunglasses – You can often find these in packs at major retail stores or purchase online.
- Sparkly Pipe Cleaners

Want a different look? Or don’t quite have those supplies? Here are some other things to consider making available:
- other colors of pipe cleaners (with no sparkles or metallic)
- washi tape (or painter’s tape) to wrap the glasses (a nice alternative if you’re concerned about the small metal wire in the pipe cleaners)
- yarn or string
- pony beads or small wood beads (to add to the end of the pipe cleaners)
How to Make This New Year’s Eve Glasses Craft
01
Prepare glasses
Carefully pop the lenses out of the sunglasses.
02
Pick pipe cleaner and wrap
Start wrapping the pipe cleaner around the frame of the glasses.
03
Continue wrapping
Continue wrapping until the sunglasses are entirely covered in pipe cleaners.
04
Finish wrapping and add sides
Tuck in the ends of the pipe cleaners so they don’t stick out and poke kids when worn.
Cut segments of pipe cleaners and wrap them one time around the top sides of the frame to create “fireworks.”
