Enjoy A Holiday Decoration That’s Fun and Frugal!
Need a Christmas activity for young learners that creates a larger decoration (to be used as part of a larger display)? Maybe you’d like a project that uses common craft supplies for a delightful final product? Or perhaps you want a creative craft that encourages your children to practice fine motor skills?
I’m thrilled to share this paper plate ornament craft that’s perfect for all of those things and many more!
My boys get VERY excited for the holiday season. Excited doesn’t even really begin to describe their energy and enthusiasm. The countdown to Christmas could get a bit crazy here, especially when they were young.
In addition to get-up-and-move activities (like our free printable holiday fitness prompts), I organized a bunch of DIY projects to help my boys focus all that enthusiasm into positive activities. When those projects included fun ways to practice fine motor skills (like tearing, cutting with scissors, and using glue sticks), it felt like bonus points.
This Christmas ornament craft made with paper plates and tissue paper is one of our favorites. I had to recreate it and share with you. I hope that your little elves enjoy it as much as mine did!

How to Make This Paper Plate Ornament Craft
01
Prepare the tissue paper
Cut the tissue paper into squares.
02
Add glue and tissue paper
Apply the glue to the back of the paper plate. Start gluing the tissue paper squares to it, covering the entire plate.
03
Add ornament topper
Cut a rectangle from the black construction paper and glue it to the top of the paper plate.
04
Add ornament hanger
Cut the pipe cleaner in half and glue it to the back of the black construction paper.
Tip: Use a purple disappearing glue stick so the kids know where to apply the tissue paper squares. It’s best to work a section at a time so the glue doesn’t dry too fast.
Creative Ideas for Making and Using Your Paper Plate Ornament
I encourage you to think outside the box when it comes to making this paper plate ornament craft. What materials do you have that you could use to add a creative touch?
You can totally go the traditional route and use red and green. OR brainstorm different colors that your students would like to make their ornament. Maybe they’d like a more metallic effect so gold and silver would work? Perhaps they’d like a rainbow effect or their favorite colors? There are SO many possibilities!
Oh, another fun idea is to trace a shape, letter, or number to fill in with tissue paper! Then, use a contrasting color around it. I share an example of this idea in my Grinch paper plate craft (with red heart).
Make a cool collage of ornaments by using different sizes of paper plates (or cut down a larger one) for a variety of shapes and sizes. You can attach to a piece of yarn, ribbon, or string for a neat banner. Or you can create a display on a wall, bulletin board, hallway, door, and windows.
