This paper shooting star craft for kids is out of this world! This is a fun project that can be done all year round, but it is a great Christmas craft as well as a craft to make in August when the meteor shower (Perseids) is most easily observed.
We also think this project pairs nicely with the nursery rhyme Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Make the whole class partake and create the most wonderful classroom wall art display.

You can use our template designed especially for this craft (you can grab it in our membership) or use one of our free star outline stencils to make it. This idea can be used to make the coolest bulletin board as well; just have the kids add their photos inside the star and pair it with a catchy slogan like “We are shooting for the stars.”
How to Make the Paper Shooting Star Craft for Kids
What you need:
- our printable template (optional) or a hand-drawn star
- white print paper
- cardstock in any color of your choosing
- scissors
- glue
Step by Step Tutorial
Print out the template – if your kids want to color the star independently, print the black and white version.
Have them cut out the star shape.
Place the star cutout on the background and trace around one side of the star to mark its location (this is optional).
Then, apply glue to the part.
Glue on the paper strips.
Have kids glue them one by one to the cardstock. We used six wider strips for our shooting star tail—yellows, oranges, and pale orange strips.
Starting with one of the outer paper strips, have the kids make a few loops.
At the end of each strip, apply a small amount of glue.
Then, stick it to the cardboard so the swirl stays in place.
Have them repeat the procedure with every strip.
The final step is to glue on the paper star!
All done! The shooting star has taken off!
