How to Make the Q-Tip Painted Christmas Tree

What you need:

  • scissors
  • glue
  • construction paper (white, brown, and yellow)
  • black marker
  • craft paints (various colors)
  • Q-tips

Step by Step Tutorial

Start by giving your child a piece of white construction paper.

Step 1Step 1

Instruct them to use a black marker to draw a wavy line going from the top of the paper to the bottom.

This line will represent the Christmas tree lights cable.

It should wiggle and curve, just like a string of lights would!

Step 2Step 2

Have them dip the end of a Q-tip into blue paint (or any color of their choice) and start making small dots along the black wavy line.

Step 3Step 3

These dots will be the Christmas lights on the tree!

Have them choose another color (we chose the red paint) and make more dots.

Step 4Step 4

Encourage the kids to add different colors like red, yellow, orange, pink, and green, to make the lights look colorful and bright.

Step 5Step 5

Continue making dots along the line until it is filled with a festive display of lights. The more colors, the better!

Once the lights are done, it’s time to think about the tree!

Have kids use a piece of yellow construction paper and cut out a nice star.

Glue it to the top of the tree.

Step 6Step 6

Now it’s time to make a tree pot!

Hand the kids a small piece of brown construction paper.

Ask them to cut out a trapezoid shape—this will be the tree pot.

The base of the trapezoid should be narrower than the top.

Step 7Step 7

Fold down the wider parallel side of the trapezoid slightly to create the top edge of the pot and glue it to the bottom of the Christmas tree.

Step 8Step 8

Allow the painted tree to dry completely before hanging it up or displaying it as a holiday decoration.
