See CMOM’s Sprawling New Space

The Children’s Museum of Manhattan unveiled new details of its $300 million transformation this week. Overlooking Central Park at Central Park West and West 96th Street, the historical church-turned-to-museum will transform into an 8,000-square-foot bustling hub for children and families throughout the city, giving CMOM more than twice the visitor capacity of its current location. The new CMOM is expected to open its door in 2028.

Here are some of the exciting experiences you can look forward to:

Wide Wild World

Located on the museum’s second floor, this exhibit is dedicated to exploration, science, and the environment. These hands-on experiences and immersive technologies invite children to discover an array of ecosystems from rainforests to savannahs and undersea reefs.

What Will I Create Today?

The museum’s great hall features a 22-foot-high ceiling, and the theme of “What Will I Create Today?” The largest exhibit will be a multi-level creativity lab offering children the opportunity to paint, write, cook, and design. The STEAM-focused experiences also include scientific experimentation, coding, and more.

An Interactive Water and Sound Show, Made by Children

On the museum’s fourth floor, an interactive water and sound experience will allow children to compose, conduct, and perform music while introducing them to instruments from cultures around the world. There are also two adjacent galleries offering spaces for educator-led programs.

For Those Who Can’t Wait

Until the opening of the new space, CMOM continues to operate at its longtime home on West 83rd Street. Visit our Family Activity Calendar to keep up with special events and programming and see all our favorite things to do at the museum here.
