The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is one of my all-time favourite holiday tales. I watch it every year, and I always get a little teary-eyed at the turning point of the story:

And what happened then? Well, in Whoville they say that the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day. And then the true meaning of Christmas came though, and the Grinch found the strength of ten Grinches plus two.

Make our Grinch Gnome after watching “The Grinch”

I thought it would be fun to make a Grinch craft after watching the holiday special with the kids this Christmas.

At first I thought it would be fun to make these clear glass Grinch ornaments, but the face was a bit tricky to get right, so I needed to come up with something easier for the kids.

After giving it some thought, I decided to modify the process we used to make our gnome ornaments a couple of years ago, and I have to say, I was delighted with the results.

Behold our adorable Grinch-gnome ornament.

I love it so much!

Our Grinch gnome is easy to make, requires minimal supplies, and is so cute that YOUR heart might just grow 3 sizes today.

How to Make a Grinch Gnome Ornament

How to Make a Grinch Gnome Ornament

  1. Sketch and cut out cardboard base.

On a piece of thin cardboard (we used a cereal box), sketch a triangle that’s 3.5 inches wide at the base and 5 inches tall.
At the top of the triangle, draw a couple of sharp bends off to one side for the droopy tip of your grinch’s hat.
    Cut your cardboard hat out.

  2. Glue cardboard hat piece to felt.

Spread a thin layer of white glue over the cardboard and press it firmly onto a larger piece of red felt.
Note: Instead of felt, you can use red fabric, paper or paint.

  3. Trim excess felt.

With the side facing you, and trim away any excess felt.

  4. Cut green yarn for beard.

    You’ll need approx. 100 x 5-inch strands of yarn (or 50 x 10-inch strands folded in half).
Loosely loop the yarn around your hand about 50 times. Cut to detach the ball of yarn and then cut through all the loops once. This will give you about 50 10-inch strands of yarn.

  5. Attach beard to hat

Lay the grinch hat in front of you with the cardboard side facing up. Fold this handful of 10-inch strands in half and use your glue gun to attach them along the bottom edge of the cardboard.
Trim to even up the ends.
TIP: Always keep a bowl of ice water nearby when working with hot glue.

  6. Add white trim to hat.

Stretch a couple of cotton balls out and glue them along the base of the grinch’s hat.

  7. Add pom poms.

Glue a white pom pom to the pointy tip of the grinch’s hat.
Glue a green pom pom nose in the center of the ornament just below the base of the grinch’s hat.

  8. Add felt heart.

Cut a small heart out of your red felt and glue to the grinch’s beard.

  9. Add a loop for hanging.

Cut a piece of green yarn or green metallic thread. Knot the ends and attach to the back of the ornament with hot glue.

Hang your Grinch gnome in a prominent place on your Christmas tree so it can remind you of the true meaning of Christmas every time you see it.
